For as long as i can remember, I have wanted a secretary desk with a fold down desktop surface. When I worked in an office job I would spend many a lunch hour in furniture shops ooh-ing and ahh-ing over desks that I could not afford.
Apologies for the state of the photos, I was in a rush and had a limited time-frame in which to convince Hubster that we HAD to buy this. She was in pretty bad condition… the veneer was scratched all over and needed a lot of TLC. Unfortunately I forgot to take photo’s (aside from snapchats) during the process but I’ll explain how we got from point A to point B. First she got a good sanding…. Like remove ALL of the veneer kind of sanding. This step sucked. Big time. It took sooo long and was sooo painful, although my upper body strength improved immensely! We briefly considered stripping it back but one look at the chemicals involved in that process and we were back to the good ole sander. We then fed the wood with a lovely combination of equal parts linseed oil, vinegar, meths and turps. The final wood finish was a couple of coats of Briwax in rustic pine. This was the first time I’ve ever used Briwax but colour me impressed. Easy application, looks great and easy clean up – win, win, win in my book. Can’t wait to use it on more projects! Installation of the new fixings took longer than anticipated, especially that pesky lock. Boy does she make me happy!
